Robotics Competition

In today’s post, I will talk about my most recent robotics competition with my team. I hope to motivate some girls to give robotics a try because, although it was nerve-wracking, it was ultimately rewarding.

Background

In our high school, Robotics is offered as an after-school club. The club comprises students from 9th through 12th grade, but the team I am on consists solely of 11th graders.

My Experience

As I walked into the vast, bustling hall filled with teams from every corner of the state, I was struck by an overwhelming sense of both excitement and anxiety. There I was, a teenage girl with dreams of making a mark in the world of robotics, standing among competitors who were, for the most part, boys. It was hard not to notice that, among all the participants, only four or five were girls. This stark disparity vividly illustrated the gender gap that still exists in STEM fields, particularly in robotics.

After the initial shock, I was determined not just to participate but to excel. The lack of female representation in this competition wasn’t just a challenge; it was an opportunity to inspire change and encourage more girls like me to enter the world of Robotics.

As we made last-minute adjustments and ensured that everything was in perfect order, I felt a sense of purpose. This competition was more than just a contest of technical skill and innovation; it was a way to challenge stereotypes and show that passion and expertise in robotics are not confined to a particular gender. Through the hard work and dedication of everyone on the team, we were able to win the competition! It was strange being one of the only teams with girls on it, much less multiple girls, but I felt proud as we stood up to receive our award.

Through this experience, I learned valuable lessons about resilience, determination, and the importance of representation. It highlighted the need for more initiatives that encourage girls to pursue their interests in STEM from a young age, fostering a more inclusive and diverse community in the field. It also reminded me of the STEM showcase event I attended, which also emphasized the need to make STEM accessible to future generations.

Wrap Up

In reflecting on my participation in the robotics competition, I am filled with hope and motivation. Yes, the gender gap was evident, but despite this, our team was still able to win. My message to other girls is clear: don’t be deterred by the numbers. Your passion, creativity, and intelligence are needed in robotics and in all areas of STEM. Together, we can break barriers and cement our place in the field of STEM.

So, to all the girls out there wondering if there’s a place for them in robotics or any other STEM field: there is. Let’s create a future in which everyone is encouraged to follow their dreams.
